Public Official Promotes Illegal Immigrant Perks

The superintendent in a large southern California public school district is spending tax dollars on an outreach campaign to let illegal immigrants know they qualify for discounted in-state tuition at all the state’s public colleges.

San Bernardino County Superintendent Herbert Fischer, an elected official that serves four-year terms, believes many illegal immigrants don’t take advantage of this taxpayer-financed perk because they don’t know about it. To change that, his office created an informative pamphlet to distribute to schools throughout the dozens of districts that he oversees.

With an annual operating budget of $350 million, the San Bernardino County superintendent oversees nearly 2,000 employees and 33 local school districts. He also serves as an intermediate agency between the state’s department of education and all the county’s school districts and his office operates one of the two federally funded parent resource centers in California.

It seems outrageous that this public official, elected to serve American students, instead uses public funds to encourage illegal immigrants to benefit from a costly perk that should be reserved for legal residents and citizens. The superintendent’s office calls it an outreach to parents and families that fits into the county’s goal of promoting education beyond high school.

California is one of ten states that still offer the coveted tuition break at public colleges to illegal immigrants. Many states have reversed the costly policy. In fact, in the last few years four states—Arizona, Colorado, Georgia and Oklahoma—have created policies to refuse in-state-tuition at public institutions to those living in the country illegally.

South Carolina recently became the first state to completely ban illegal alien students form all public colleges and North Carolina’s attorney general ordered its 58 community college campuses to stop enrolling illegal immigrants because admitting them violates federal law.

While federal law requires public elementary and secondary schools to enroll illegal immigrants, it prohibits illegal immigrants from obtaining tuition breaks that are not available to all United States citizens. The states that for years have violated the law have suffered no consequences, however.

In order to qualify for

In order to qualify for in-state tuition the illegal immigrant must have attended/graduated from a high school in that state. That is not a break or a special favor, its a right they've earned through hard work. I dont see the point of denying an education to good students regardless of their immigration status.

Hopefully more states will follow California's (and the other nine states) lead.

It's the Law

Andy, what part of ILLEGAL do you not understand? If someone is illegal they do not have all the rights that legal citizens or residents do.

People are just being penny

People are just being penny wise and pound foolish with this. It's much better to spend a little money to keep illegal immigrants in school/college so they (and their kids) can become productive members of society, rather than leave them with no option but to live on the streets and turn to crime and then have to spend much more money keeping them in jail or trying to deport them.

WHO'S RESPONSIBLE?

I see from some of the postings on here, you have some rotten coruppt illegal alien supports which fall into one of serveral categories: Business people wanting to cheat people out of a living wage....drug dealers and smugglers and their associates, coyotes who make their money smuggling illegals in. And catholics who have joined with the evil intentions of the vatican to destroy this country because they ran off all the people filling their dirty coffers by abusing, using, and hiding child molestors who should have been by law, put to death. This is disgusting. If they won't enforce our laws, then the only choice left to the people is to enforce them for them-vigilante law. Do we really want that?

Illegal aliens in USA,

Illegal aliens in USA, according to USA laws, do not belong here. They are to be deported ASAP. Any government money going to criminals (those who commit crimes against USA) is preposterous! All those who have funded such absurd ideas need to be immediately proseucted for treason. USA taxpayers are on the hook for enough money already. Those who like paying for them can sign a list and pay the bill. Vickie

Illegals getting tuition breaks

Absolutely not! The reason we are in this mess is because some people can't figure out that rewarding illegal behavior is wrong. We have to stop feeding the bears.
I live in Southern California and have watched my quality of life suffer daily because of the illegal situation.
We need to enforce our laws and secure the border. Period.
We need to make it easier for legal citizens to go to college. Not illegals.
We need to discourage more from coming here and draining us. Not encourage them.
We need to educate kids that have some respect for our country and what it stands for. If there are illegal kids that want to go to college, they can do that in their home countries and apply for citizenship here.
From what I see these people come here with no respect for our laws from day one. They continue that and pass that attitude down to their children.
We have to stop being stupid.

It is really simple

We are a nation of laws. We are law abiding people. We are civilized people. Why try to make it complicated by rewarding illegal behavior?
Stop feeding the bears.
We don't want illegal activity and we don't want to encourage or reward it.
Secure our borders. Protect our people. Enforce our laws.
